Winners of 10th Macau Design Biennial Announced

Created by Macau Designers Association, ‘Macau Design Biennial’ has been held every two years since 1994 and is now in its 10th edition. The Biennial is the only professional competition for the whole design sector of Macau and a representative event for designers in the cross-Strait four regions. It seeks to enhance the understanding and the importance of creative design and corporate image to industrial development. Through the creativity and practicality of design, organizers hope to enrich the internal value of traditional art and culture as well as corporate brands to add value to Macau’s cultural and creative industries. This year’s Macau Design Biennial is co-hosted by MAM under the auspices of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau S.A.R. Government and Macau Designers Association, and was partly sponsored by Macau Foundation, Macau Government Tourist Office and Polytrade Paper.

The call for submission of ‘The 10th Macau Design Biennial’ was concluded on the 15th of June. The competition has attracted participants from Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Japan and Malaysia. In total 2,202 entries by 694 participants were received this year.

Following the first round of online selection, the second round of selection of 902 entries in the Public Category and the 629 entries in the Student Category were conducted. Participants sent their works to Macau for the final selection by the professional adjudication panel comprising He Jianping (German), Kei Matsushita (Japan), Bi Xuefeng (Mainland China), Su Wen-Ching (Taiwan), André Carrilho (Portugal) and David Lo (Hong Kong) on the 25th of July. The panel then decided the winners of 9 Gold Awards, 20 Silver Awards, 21 Bronze Awards, 86 Most Outstanding Awards, 6 Jury Awards, Polytrade Paper Award, Tourism Souvenirs Gold and Bronze Award, as well as the highest honor – ‘Best Gold Award’ – among others.

The panel adopted a fair, just and professional standard throughout their judgment to make Macau Design Biennial a respected and fair design competition. The jury believes that the quality of award-winning works of this edition is the best of all editions. They hope that the quality of works can be recognized through participating in the professional design competition, and that the public display can intensify the influence of the design industry on the whole of society in order to elevate the professional image of the industry. Finally, they hope that their counterparts may continue to endeavor for more surprises for the jury of the Biennial next year.

Winners will be invited to attend the awards ceremony on 16th December 2015 in Macau. All award-winning entries will be showcased in the Handover Gifts Museum of Macau from that day. Some of the award-winning works will be collected by Macau Museum of Art on a permanent basis. More importantly, this major design event will elevate participating designers’ international reputation.
