GBA Design Gallery Now Open to Showcase Design Power and Promote Development of Tourism and Design
The first-ever design store featuring cultural and creative products across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) was unveiled in Hengqin, Zhuhai today (29 January). This morning, the GBA Design Gallery (referred to below as the ‘Gallery’) was inaugurated at an opening ceremony and distinguished guests from different sectors in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao were invited to witness the occasion. The opening ribbon was cut by the Director of the Macau Investment and Development Limited, Mr. Victor Chan Chi Ping; Member of the Administrative Committee of the Cultural Industries Fund of the Macao SAR Government, Ms. Chu Miu Lai; Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Ms. Cheong Lai San; Secretary General of the Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations, Mr. Freeman Lau Siu Hong; President of the Zhuhai Industrial Design Association, Ms. Zong Mingming; representative from the Consumer Business Department of Chimelong Group Co., Ltd, Mr. Zhao Yantao; renowned Macao architect and painter, Mr. Carlos Alberto dos Santos Marreiros; representative of the Zhuhai Design Week, Ms. Gao Jingwen; CEO of the Macau Design Centre, Mr. Dirco Fong; and Director of the Zhuhai-Macau Design Centre, Mr. James Chu. The ceremony took place in a lively atmosphere and in the presence of many cultural luminaries from Zhuhai and Macao, as well as many brand designers.
During his opening speech, the CEO of the Macau Design Centre, Mr. Dirco Fong, expressed that with the establishment of the Gallery, they hope to facilitate exchange among designers from GBA cities and especially the collaborated tourism development between Macao and Hengqin. Through this collaborative project with the famous vacation paradise, Chimelong, they aim to encourage distinguished GBA designers to create more exquisite souvenirs and products.
The GBA Design Gallery project is organised by the Macau Design Centre with the support of the Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations and the Zhuhai-Macau Design Centre. The Gallery has gathered over 300 products of around 50 designer brands from GBA cities such as Macao, Hong Kong and Zhuhai, including over 10 emerging brands from Macao which have gained popularity among customers in recent years, such as Faith & Fearless, Hylé design Macau, Meeet, Early Cloud Design and Chelsa Jewelry & Art. In addition, the Gallery also features crossover products by renowned Hong Kong designers and souvenirs by cultural and creative enterprises from Zhuhai, both of which have been ingeniously designed with abundant creativity.
It is worth noting that some of the products featured in the Gallery are award-winning designs, such as ‘X Bench’, the Second Prize winner of the Salone Satellite Award in Milan Design Week; ‘V’mo Travellers’ Log’, one of the Top 10 in the 2018 Best Stationery of China Award; and ‘CROZ – DIY Digital Camera’, winner of multiple awards including the DFA Design for Asia Awards (2017) and the Golden Pin Design Award (2016).
In the future, the Gallery hopes to include more products and brands created by outstanding designers from other GBA cities, thereby facilitating the growth of GBA’s design power and enhancing life with design.
